After a couple of generally very good years of farming results across the country, UK farmers are heading for a very difficult year given the very wet past few months. This combined with the continued decreasing Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) payments will stretch the finances of many farms this year.
It also shines a light on the importance of reviewing land management techniques such as regenerative farming as soils with good ‘health’ are better able to handle wet conditions. There can be significant costs of converting to different farming techniques though, and a year with poor results could make this more of a challenge. As ever, in difficult financial times accurate accounting and good cashflow management is key.
Record-breaking rain over the past few months has left fields of crops under water and livestock's health at risk, adding to pressures on food producers. The flooding and extreme weather linked to climate change will undermine UK food production unless farmers get more help, the National Farmers Union said.
